NC State reached Elite Eight for first time since 1986 by defeating No. 2 Marquette.

DJ Horne scored 19 points and North Carolina State defeated Marquette 67-58 on Friday to reach the Elite Eight for the first time since 1986.

Mohamed Diarra had 11 points and 15 rebounds for the Wolfpack, who have won eight straight since the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament, which they had to win to qualify for March Madness. Casey Morsell scored 15 points.

On the 50th anniversary of NC State's first national championship in 1974, when the Wolfpack defeated the Golden Eagles, it's beginning to resemble the 1983 title.

Horne remarked, “It's magical, but I'm going to say we knew this from day one,” after his team dropped seven of nine to complete the season.

We knew our team was good.

It was all about locking in and understanding our jobs, and now was the best time.”

NC State, the 11th seed in the South, plays Sunday for a Final Four spot.

The Wolfpack had to win the ACC Tournament 41 years ago before the late Jim Valvano ran around the court looking for someone to hug after defeating high-flying Houston for the trophy.
